About Me

Image
Ciao from Sorrento! Hi everyone! My name is Josie Toland, and I’m beyond excited to share a little bit about my study abroad experience with you. I’m currently studying at the beautiful Sant’Anna Institute in Sorrento, Italy, for the spring semester through the CIS Abroad Semester on the Italian Coast program, and I couldn’t be happier with my choice! I’m a junior at UMass Amherst, majoring in Journalism and Communication, and I also have a business minor. Being here has truly been a dream come true, and I’ve already had the chance to explore so much of this beautiful town, all while diving into my studies in a whole new cultural setting. If you’ve ever considered studying abroad, or if you’re just curious about life in Sorrento, I think you’ll find that it’s an experience you won’t want to miss. I’ll be sharing all the highlights, tips, and insider information about life here at Sant’Anna, as well as everything Italy has to offer. Trust me, you’re going to love it here as much ...

Exploring Sorrento: A Slice of Paradise

Image
Sorrento is a place that will take your breath away at every turn. With its stunning natural beauty, rich culture, and relaxed charm, it’s easy to see why this coastal town is so special. Let me take you through a few of the highlights that make this town a perfect study-abroad location!

Stunning Location

The views in Sorrento are absolutely stunning. The town sits high above the Bay of Naples, offering beautiful views of the blue sea and Mount Vesuvius in the distance. Whether you're walking along the cliffs or enjoying a meal at a restaurant with a view, the scenery will amaze you. The peninsula is filled with walking trails leading to hidden beaches and lemon groves. My favorite trail is the one leading to “bagni regina giovanna” which is a beautiful viewpoint with a hidden swimming hole. Every time I step outside, I’m reminded of how lucky I am to be studying here in such a beautiful place.

Proximity to Major Attractions

Image
Sorrento is the perfect place to explore Italy, thanks to its close proximity to some amazing attractions. You can easily take a ferry to the beautiful island of Capri or go on a day trip to the Amalfi Coast. The ancient ruins of Pompeii are just a short train ride away, where you can step back in time and see the remains of the city destroyed by Mount Vesuvius. Whether you love history or adventures, Sorrento’s central location makes it the perfect home base point for it all. Me at the Ampitheatre of Pompeii!

Italian Cuisine

Sorrento is not only known for its views and attractions, but also for its amazing food. The town’s restaurants and cafes serve delicious Italian dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. From rich pasta sauces to tasty seafood, every meal is delectable. Be sure to try the local favorite, gnocchi alla Sorrentina, and my personal favorite, the buffalo mozzarella pizza!  Delicious gnocchi alla sorrentina!

Arts and Craftsmanship

Sorrento takes pride in its local craftsmanship, and there’s no shortage of artisan shops where you can find unique treasures to bring home. The town’s shops are famous for their beautiful ceramics, woodwork, and leather goods. Whether you’re looking for hand-painted tiles or picking up a leather bag, you’ll find that every piece tells a story of the town’s rich artisan heritage.  Wall art from Ceramica Artistica in Sorrento!

Sorrento is a little over an hour train ride from Naples. You will be doing most of your traveling through the train station and airport in Naples, which are very easy to navigate. Here are some places I have had the opportunity to travel to: Naples, Pompeii, Florence, Barcelona, Paris, Rome, Malta, Tenerife, and Switzerland. Airplane view over the Swiss Alps!
